MP: Stay out of Moffatt debate: Federal politicians shouldn't interfere with city, NCC issue


Federal politicians should stay out of the debate over Moffatt Farm despite the involvement of the National Capital Commission, Ottawa-Vanier MP Mauril Belanger said yesterday.

"I think it would be," he hesitated, "untoward of me to intervene," he said, when asked whether the NCC should be able to develop most of the 34-hectare former farm just north of Hog's Back.

In the last few days, Senator Anne Cools criticized the NCC and Ottawa Centre MP Mac Harb for not listening to constituents who oppose the trade.

"I don't think it is appropriate, where the city has made a decision that is being challenged to the OMB, a body with a long history and legitimacy, for a federal member to get involved," Mr. Belanger said, though he refused to criticize Ms. Cools specifically.

"You can, and you will, interpret what I'm saying and what other people have done as you see fit," he said.
