Majority of senators back PM
OTTAWA - Liberal senators have taken a cue from their elected colleagues on Parliament Hill and publicly pledged their support for Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
"Eighty-five per cent of the Liberal members of the Senate have expressed their confidence and support of the prime minister publicly," said Senator Laurier LaPierre, who was appointed to the upper chamber by Chretien last year.
Yesterday's move was attacked by Liberal Senator Anne Cools.
"Not only did I refuse to sign it before but I will go a little bit farther and say I not only disagree with it, but I condemn it," Cools told Southam News.
She called it "an objectionable solicitation by the government of Canada," and said it was "un-prime ministerial and un-senatorial."
