Senate rushes to approve MPs' pay hike: Truant senators also get break as penalties for missed sittings is cut

Liberals Serge Joyal and Jerry Grafstein objected to the large gap between the salary for House Speaker Peter Milliken, who will now collect $194,640 a year, and Senate Speaker Dan Hays, at $152,160.

Liberal Senator Anne Cools objected to linking parliamentarians' salaries to the remuneration of the chief justice of the Supreme Court, saying it goes against "the principle of separation of powers."

Senate Government leader Sharon Carstairs told the upper chamber that the salary bill is "a reasonable, fair and balanced approach" to parliamentary compensation.
